A 3/4 jaw is short, and that is the point: it reaches into the corner of a sidewall and takes a hangnail without touching the skin around it. The spring opens the handles after each squeeze, so your hand only has to close. Silicone covers the grip and stays steady when fingers are wet from a soak.

Blades are 4CR13 stainless steel, and a sleeve slides over the jaw so the tip does not catch the lining of a kit bag. At 4.4 by 2.8 inches the nipper sits inside a palm. Six colors make it easy to tell yours from a coworker's at a shared station.

Keep it to hangnails and loose, dead skin that has already lifted. The American Academy of Dermatology tells clients not to let anyone push or cut the cuticle, since that can lead to inflammation and infection, and it asks that tools be cleaned and disinfected after every client.

How to use it

1. Soften the area first, then slide the jaw under the lifted end of the hangnail.
2. Snip only skin that is already loose, never the living cuticle.
3. Put the sleeve back over the jaw before the nipper goes into your kit.
